Barbaresco, San Stunet
Piero Busso

Barbaresco, San Stunet, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

Fresh red berries with a hint of stone and stone fruit. A lovely vivid style of wine with crisp and tactile ripe tannins - seamless flow of winter fruit and natural floral aromas. Stylish but unforced and very easy to drink with an intensely stony and mineral finish. From the commune of Treiso a south east facing vineyard at 400m altitude, one of the highest parts of Barbaresco. The soils are mostly limestone with some blue Marl. The site is late ripening, usually picked ten days after the others. Typically, the wine is livelier and more linear in structure than Busso’s other Barbarescos. Aged for two years in 25hl slavonian oak casks.

Busso’s 2016 Barbaresco San Stunet is a very pretty wine. Sweet dried cherry, spice, mint, star anise, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco open first as this aromatic, translucent Barbaresco opens in the glass. Light on its feet and ethereal, the 2016 is inviting, but also a bit more ethereal than Busso fans are used to. Despite the mid-weight style, the alcohol (15%) is at the limit of being intrusive. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so.

With fruit from the comune di Treiso, the Piero Busso 2016 Barbaresco San Stunet puts on a beautiful performance. Like most of the samples in this report, I tasted this wine from my cellar at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and after a double decanting. The bouquet opens quickly with more black fruit, licorice and balsam herb compared to Busso's Barbaresco Mondino. The power threshold is also bigger in this wine, and so is the tannic impact. The wine's fiber is tight and fine.
