Brunello di Montalcino, Vecchie Vigne
Le Ragnaie

Brunello di Montalcino, Vecchie Vigne, 2013

justerini & brooks tasting note

Crystal clear and alpine pure, discrete initially but such crisp, vivid red cherry and wild strawberry fruit with a kick of chalk, stone and mineral. Bright, elegant and with crisp but well-knit tannins, this a thrilling, noble wine with a long future. From a single plot called Ragnaie, next to the estate, planted in the 60s, which at 550 metres above sea level, are among the very highest vines in Montalcino. The wine is aged in the same way as the estate’s regular Brunello in large 25hl Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months. Rarely more than 3000 bottles are produced.

critic reviews

95/100Eric Guido,Vinous

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino VV opens with mentholated freshness, as worn leather, dusty black cherry and cedar spice-box notes unfold. This is wonderfully pure and lifted in style, with a saline-tinged wave of red berry fruit and exotic spice that flows across a core of minerality. The 2013 tapers off salty and crunchy, leaving behind gentle tension as adolescent tannins slowly fade. Still maturing, this is sure to be stunning in another five to ten years.

Spice, dark fruit and delicate balsam herb appear on the bouquet of the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V V. This is a classic expression of Sangiovese, with a compact and firm approach that will serve the wine well as it ages forward in time. It definitely needs another year or two to flesh out and develop extra volume. If you like classic Brunello, this wine will appeal to your palate.
