Brunello di Montalcino, Vecchie Vigne
Le Ragnaie

Brunello di Montalcino, Vecchie Vigne, 2020

justerini & brooks tasting note

A bright, aromatic nose saturated with ruby fruits, delicate herbs, spices and stones, as always it is high toned and delicate on the nose, salty and athletic on the palate with lovely, tapered tannins and an overall moreish, relatively open feel for this typically more mineral driven site. The Vecchie Vigne Brunello comes from a single plot of vines around the winery, averaging 50 years of age. Aged for 36 months in Slavonian oak casks.

This is an outstanding wine from Le Ragnaie. Showing unescapable mineral definition, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. sees fruit sourced from the estate's oldest vines, which were planted in 1968 on sandstone soils (with quartz inclusions) at 600 meters above sea level. The bouquet is bright and fragrant, but the wine also has a salty or harder edge that gives it good runway to age and evolve. I love its elegantly built structure. Only 3,800 bottles were made.
