Trust Your Gut, Chenin Blanc, 2020

The only Chenin Lukas was able to produce this year, due to smoke taint in the Kamaraderie blocks, the TYG Chenin opens up with hay, sesame and yellow fruits, notes of wax and pithy stone fruits. On the palate an almost oyster-shell iodine note comes through and the subtle texture of fine oak – nose gives the impression that the palate will be heavier than it is, instead it is medium bodied with great tension and focus (pH below 3.2!). Intense but nicely weighted with a white currant, violet and salty, grassy finish. Textural, weighty, but utterly pristine. Proper South African Chenin. Produced from 60% Paardeberg fruit, shared with Donovan Rall and David Sadie, and 40% Stellenbosch (Polkadraii Hills), so all in all plenty of decomposed granite! Fermented and raised in 500L used oak with no battonage. 13% WO Western Cape.
