Lukas Van Loggerenberg
Geronimo, Cinsault, 2020
justerini & brooks tasting note
Production has always been around 3,500-4000bts but in 2020 Lukas scaled this up. The plan was always to make a drinkable, food-friendly wine but in the past they were not able to keep it on the skins for as long as they’d like. With the new cellar all options are available and 40% whole bunch fermentation is followed by a slow, gentle press after extended skin macerations. Planted in 1968 this site is the closest to the ocean of any Cinsault blocks in Stellenbosch. Brambly, strawberry and herbal notes, with some exotic hibiscus and kombucha – the 2020 is super flattering. Rich tannins, smooth and succulent but not heavy. Fruity but with savoury, mineral substance too. WO Stellenbosch 13%.
