    Cinsault is experiencing something of a renaissance in South Africa. Long considered the workhorse grapes, examples such as this are turning heads and reminding people that, when treated carefully, the wines can be seriously impressive. A style unique to South Africa, Cinsaults here take on a vibrant crunchy red fruit profile with floral top notes and savoury undertones. Geronimo is a blend of two vineyards in Stellenbosch, one in the Firgrove area planted in 1978 and one in Bottelary planted in 1989. The Firgrove site lends beautiful aromatics while the Bottelary site provides the fine, chalky tannic structure. The soils are decomposed granite with a high proportion of sandstone underlying – enhancing the elegant red-fruit profile of the wine. 100% whole bunch fermented, nautrally, with just one punch down a day and aged in old French oak barrels for 9 months. Bottled early to retain a freshness and crunchy character to the fruit. “This wine speaks to the big leap of faith we took starting this big venture of ours, with friends cheering and helping us, and making us realize that we can do it.” In our mind, this is comfortably the best Geronimo to date. We were blown away by the precision and elegance that Lukas’ has drawn out of the variety in this 2019 being imbued with bright, bristling crunchy red fruit and a persistent line of acidity, pink peppercorns, pink grapefruit and pomegranate seeds. While refreshing and enticing now, we’d love to taste it again in five years.

    Well, the cat is out of the bag, and Lukas Van Loggerenberg is now well-known as one of the Cape’s hottest tickets. He does not own any vineyards but has charmed his way into some prime sites across Stellenbosch, Swartland and Paarl. Combining magical old vineyards that, in Lukas’ words, “give a real nervous energy” with a love for the cool climate regions of Europe; particularly the Loire Valley, it is not surprising that his young wines are some of the most electrifying in South Africa today. As a lover of acidity and lower alcohol levels Lukas is an early picker. Although based in Stellenbosch, “my harvest starts at the same time as the guys in the Swartland. But it goes way on! I like to blend different pickings and if the conditions are good then I leave a little bit to really benefit from extended hang time”. Lukas is perhaps most famous for his two dazzling Chenin Blancs; Kamaraderie and Trust Your Gut, and Breton – a fabulous Loire Valley inspired Cabernet Franc. Kamaraderie is a two hectare vineyard in Paarl planted in the 1960s, while Trust Your Gut is a blend of Stellenbosch, Swartland and Paarl fruit. He also works with Cinsault and Syrah and, unsurprisingly, these are some of the most refined examples around. And don’t miss his pale, Provence-style Rose!
