Skaliekop, Chenin Blanc, Swartland, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

The Skaliekop (Shale-Hill) vines were planted in 1985 in very shallow shale soils in the Paardeberg, an anomaly in this granite-rich region. A small tractor road divides the Plat’bos and Skaliekop vineyards. Skaliekop was harvested mid-February in two tranches. The wines of the different pickings were aged separately, before blending and then bottling at the end of the year. Sparkling, clear-cut zippy citrus fruits and white fruits, the 2022 has an impactful feel with a firm stony edge. Wonderfully pure and mineral, it should age with style. Old Vine Project certified. 2,500bts were produced.

critic reviews

90/100Anthony Mueller,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Perhaps the most open-knit and waxy of the lineup, the 2022 Skaliekop Chenin Blanc displays breadth, but it doesnt have the same depth as previous vintages. The palate is slightly clipped with a medium-bodied expression and offers a spicy, mineral essence before ending with a rocky, mineral-laced finish. It should go at least 10 years, maybe longer.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc Skaliekop comes from shale soils in the Paardeberg, aged 11 months in used oak barrels. It has a slightly more floral bouquet with pressed yellow flowers, touches of wild peaches and nectarine, an underlying mineralité becoming more pronounced with aeration. The well-balanced palate has a white peach and apricot-tinged entry and just a hint of more tropical fruit but still a very precise and sustained finish. Excellent.
