Château Hosanna, Pomerol, 2023
This is always the most opulent of the Moueix Pomerols, however, the 2023 is perhaps a little more dialled down and less intoxicating. Notes of ripe hedgerow fruit, sweet black cherry, black tea and eucalyptus unfurl from the glass, leading to a seductive core of black and blue fruit inflected with hints of liquorice, cocoa and mocha all supported by plush, rich, velvety tannins, ripe fruits and lots of detail.
critic reviews
A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, matured in 50% new oak, the 2023 Hosanna opens with a pronounced creamy-oak profile, revealing aromas of ripe dark berries, licorice, gentian and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, generous and rich, it is built around a textural core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves in a youthfully firm finish.
Oh this is good, layers of swirling black fruits and cool campfire smoke, espresso, cassis, bilberry, pomegranate, complex and enticing, no need to wait too long although another few years will soften tannins further. Harvest September 7 to 19, 50% new oak for ageing.
The 2023 Hosanna has quite a refined bouquet that is missing the bandwidth and complexity that a great Hosanna can bring. It feels a bit conservative compared to, say, the La Fleur Petrus or Trotanoy. The palate is well-balanced, with supple, pliant tannins matched by a fine thread of acidity. Lightly spiced, a little balsamic in the mix toward the end, at least this Pomerol finishes with a bit of chutzpah. Not bad at all, though I err toward other vintages.
The 2023 Hosanna is deep garnet-purple in color. Gregarious notes of boysenberry preserves, ripe plums, and wild blueberries jump from the glass, followed by hints of violets, dark chocolate, and camphor. The medium to full-bodied palate has impressive density and plushness, with lovely tension and a fragrant finish. The blend is 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc.
