Château Roc de Cambes, Cotes de Bourg, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

The Roc de Cambes hails from the clay, limestone soils above the Domaine de Cambes vineyard and always produces a denser more concentrated wine. It often matches its more exclusive partner, Tertre Roteboeuf, although in 2022, the Tertre clearly has the edge. Initially quite funky with degraded fruit, Kirsch, coconut and a certan leesiness. The palate is decadent with super ripe black plum, creme de cassis and some green hedgerow fruit. Quite marked by wood at this early stage. Finishes with grippy tannins laced with spices.

critic reviews

93/100Chris Kissack,The Wine Independent

The grand vin from this Mitjavile estate opens with a fairly classic nose of liquorice-dressed black fruits and toasty, smouldering oak, cut through by a vein of reduction. There is a charming integration and polish to the palate, giving it a silky, seductive weight, with a fine wrapping of powdery and toasted tannins, with a peppery, spicy edge. A fine Roc de Cambes here;the alcohol does sit on the high side, although to be fair there is no heat on the palate at all. The alcohol on the label is 15%.

The 2022 Roc de Cambes remains perfumed and sensual on the nose with black cherries, peony and iris flower alongside a hint of cassis that blossoms in the glass. This has wonderful delineation. The medium-bodied palate has grainy tannins and comes across slightly more toasty than the Domaine des Cambes, leading to a tensile finish of black pepper, sage and graphite. This is the most linear and Left-Bank-fashioned cuvée from the Mitjavile family this year, and it has bags of potential.

92-94/100William Kelley,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Mingling aromas of sweet cherries and cassis with notions of licorice, espresso roast and spices, the 2022 Roc de Cambes is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a broad-shouldered profile, framed by powdery tannins, and concluding with a chalky finish. This is always the most structured wine in the Mitjaville portfolio.
