Puligny Montrachet, Les Folatières, 1er Cru, 2020
A lot more brooding and mineral compared to the joy-filled sunshine of Referts. This is a wine that crisply articulates its rugged, rocky origins. After a quiet start the wine gently expands. Displaying a controlled, calm intensity this offers flavours of minerals and crushed stones with a background of yellow plum and citrus. Everything is in perfect harmony here. A wonderful, sophisticated wine to dwell on. One of the top vineyards in Puligny, next to Caillerets, from a high up parcel where the soil is poor and stony but well exposed to the sun, situated in the northernmost corner of this great vineyard, right next to the Leflaive vines - above Clos de la Garenne. Fermentation and élévage take place in 350 litre barrels, with no bâtonnage, for 12 months before six months in stainless steel.
critic reviews
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru initially has the finest nose amongst what turns out to be an inconsistent flight of wines from this climat. However, it seems to dispense with that after time in the glass and just lacks a bit of character. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and linear. This is the most refined of the nine Folatières in the flight. It's creamy towards the finish. The 2020 improves in the glass, and I feel I initially underrated this.
