Puligny-Montrachet, Les Referts, 1er Cru, 2020
One of the greatest Referts we can remember tasting. Perfumed ripe lemon and lemon blossom nose. The palate is ravishingly elegant, open-knit and generous but without ever being decadent. Very pretty and stylish flavours of Mirabelle, citrus zest and orange blossom gently roll across the palate, refining into a long energetic finish. Stunning. From prime-situated vines next door to those of Sauzet, where the large clay content of the soils yields generous round wines of beautiful fruit. Fermentation and élévage take place in 350 litre barrels, with no bâtonnage, for 12 months before six months in stainless steel.
critic reviews
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with wonderful mineralité and tension, hints of Granny Smith and Petrichor. There is real energy coiled up in this Puligny. The palate is well-balanced with well-integrated oak. It has a stylistic similarity to Sauzet's Les Perrières, with real tension and poise. A sapid, malic finish lingers long in the mouth. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
