Beaune, Grèves, 1er Cru, 2021
Beaune Grèves is an entirely different animal from Sizies, with more dimension and an electric style of minerality running through it. The iron rich soils have lent the wine a certain density, with a flavours of wild hedgerow berries, ferrous earth notes and hints of the forest that bring an autumnal feel. A real success. Aged in 25% new oak and fermented with 30% whole bunches. From 65-year-old vines planted on soils with more clay than the Domaine's Beaune Sizies giving a denser wine. Fermented with a third whole bunches and aged in 20% new oak.
critic reviews
The 2021 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a very heavy reduction that feels fixed on the nose. This is struggling to translate its fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins. Dark berry fruit commingles with tea leaves, quite strict and assertive on the finish at the expense of finesse and precision. Cumbersome. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
