Domaine de Montille
Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2017
justerini & brooks tasting note
Intense, lively dark fruit. Minerally and tense with nice flesh and body. Finely-etched tannins add structure. There is a soft, affirming chew to the mid-palate to complement rather than dominate the fruit and minerals. Well-harnessed power with crisp, clean and vibrant dark hedgerow and black cherry fruit lifting the invigorating, long finish. Like the Mitans this is fermented only with whole bunch. The ageing is with a shade more new oak (approximately 40%) but this is barely discernible, its just a fundamentally different wine with a strong terroir character. Taillepieds has gravelly top soil over limestone resulting in tight-grained powerful wine. These are the domaine’s oldest Volnay vines, 80 years-old.
