Barolo, Bricco Fiasco, 2020
Piercing red fruits and a more exotic perfume soften with hints of soil and sandalwood, the palate sapid and tense with lots of fine-grained tannins and a cleansing, refreshing stone-laden acid base. The Bricco Fiasco is a relatively sandy plot at the top of the Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto, planted with 70-year-old vines. Since 2016 the wine has been aged exclusively in large oak botti, for two years.
critic reviews
Made with old-vine fruit (planted in 1940) in Castiglione Falletto, the Azelia 2020 Barolo Bricco Fiasco has a sweet side that comes forth as candied cherry. It adds brightness for sure, but the wine is otherwise gracefully free of any overt signs of over-ripeness. Thanks to its lean and streamlined mouthfeel, I would suggest a near or medium-term drinking window for this accessible vintage. Production is limited to 5,400 bottles.
The 2020 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a delicate, open-knit offering, especially for this site, where Barolos tend to be quite a bit more tannic. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar and spice open nicely with some coaxing.
