Barolo, Bricco Fiasco, 2007
Wonderful aromas of ripe fruits, flowers and sweet Asian spices, gripping and serious with deliciously vibrant pure fruit notes of strawberry, rose and cherry, mixed with gentle cocoa nuances on the long finish. Less extracted and more fruit expression than previous vintages whilst retaining a statuesque beauty. Very impressive. One of the great Castiglione vineyards, the same vineyard as Scavino’s Bric dël Fiasc but named using the standard Italian dialect as opposed to that of Piedmont. Aged in large Slavonian oak “botti” and barriques with 20-25% new oak for 24 months.
critic reviews
Good deep red. Wild, smoky aromas of superripe red fruits, dark chocolate and game, with a suggestion of tropical fruits. Big, broad, fine-grained and sweet, delivering the fleshiness and size of the better 2007s. I wanted more high notes but the slowly mounting, powerful finish, featuring serious but fully ripe tannins, lingers impressively with notes of smoke, tar, mocha and minerals.
