Château Clinet, Pomerol, 2009

justerini & brooks tasting note

Another controversial wine from the right bank. Some would say that Clinet has been over-extracted for several vintages; others would argue that it is just ripe with fine flavours and plenty of structure. One thing is for sure, Robert Parker is a big fan and there is much to admire about this property. The flavours are super ripe, with notes of black fruit jam. This is rich, but also very vivid and there is impressive purity of fruit. Yes it is a big extracted style, but the tannins are by no means coarse; it is a big, chewy, brawny Pomerol that wants to be noticed and is. It will probably develop into something rather delicious given time.

This is a big muscular 2009 but it is great quality, hard to argue with, full of deliciously textured and plump black cherry fruits, sculpted, powerful, intense, black chocolate, charcoal, creme caramel and fennel spice. A one point upgrade from last year's tasting, as it stands out among its peers. 60% new oak. Ronan Laborde owner.

The 2009 Clinet has a clean and precise bouquet, more backward than I expected. Beautiful black cherry and raspberry fruit with just a hint of dried blood, ferrous notes in the background (this bottle less opulent than the one at Farr's tasting.) The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well judged acidity, hints of mocha and dark chocolate filtering through the black fruit with a sensual and silky smooth finish. Quite modern in the scheme of things but very attractive. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits Ten Year On tasting.
