Château Haut Bailly

Château Haut Bailly, Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan, 2006

justerini & brooks tasting note

This is an outstanding 2006, and arguably better than this château's 2005. It combines the usual elegant breeding that we expect from this superb terroir with a larger structure than has previously been apparent. Beyond the relative simplicity of the pure red fruit, the real essence of this wine lies in its secondary complexity and finely chiselled features. Fine terroir is clear on the nose; the palate is focussed, the tannins well-honed and silky; considerable expansion on mid-palate through flavours of olive tapenade, rabbit stew, soft oak and tobacco, then caramel, finishing on a pure note of very ripe cassis. Bravo!

critic reviews

93/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Cool blue and black fruits, well balanced, soft campfire smoke, blackberry and pomegranate, supple and welcoming even though this was a cooler-than-average year, with soft hints of mint leaf, grilled sandalwood and liquorice. A wine with finesse and clarity of expression. 50% new oak. Harvest September 13 to October 15. 41hl/h yield, Denis Dubourdieu consultant. 50% new oak.

The 2006 Haut-Bailly is a very capable Pessac-Léognan from an oft-overlooked vintage. This repeats its showing from a few months earlier with lovely blue and black fruits and violet aromas. Perhaps a mote of chimney soot here? The palate is medium-bodied with that slightly ferrous note and tobacco. This bottle is a touch creamier in texture than previous examples. This is drinking perfectly now, but there's a lot left in the tank. Tasted at the château.
