critic reviews

92/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot, the 2003 Kirwan is deep garnet-brick in color. It comes barreling out with pronounced notes of stewed black plums, boysenberry preserves and crème de cassis, plus suggestions of unsmoked cigars, cedar chest, sassafras and spice cake. The medium-bodied palate has a sturdy structure of chewy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long with loads of exotic spices and mature fruit nuances.

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2003 Kirwan exhibits a dense plum/ruby color, sweet creme de cassis notes intermixed with spicy fruitcake and cedarwood, medium to full body, good freshness, sweet tannin and a long finish. This beauty has hit its plateau of maturity, but it is in no danger of falling apart. Drink it over the next decade.

89/100Stephen Tanzer,Vinous

Good deep red. Red raspberry, roast coffee and an overlay of toasty oak on the nose. Sweet and inviting, with supple, fresh red fruit flavors and a seamless texture. Finishes with good breadth and sneaky persistence, with fruit that coats the palate. This has turned out very well.
