Château L'Evangile, Pomerol, 2006

justerini & brooks tasting note

This wine absolutely bowled us over: from the first traces of its fabulously sumptuous nose to the very end of its long and complex finish, it is a hedonistic pleasure dome of charm and pure enjoyment. There are suave, sexy aromas of sweet, toasty blackberry on the nose, with nuances of perfume; the palate is awash with pure, ripe strawberry; the tannins are so fresh and silky, very morish, and provide a perfect balance to the considerable weight and depth of flavour. This is voluptuous Pomerol at its most flamboyant, utterly irresistible! A blend of 86% merlot and 14% cabernet franc, l'Evangile was the first to begin harvesting in 2006, beginning on 13th September and ensuring a large proportion of their merlot was in before there was any sign of rain.

Bright ruby-red. Reduced, wild nose offers black raspberry, graphite, tobacco and dried flowers. Sweet, dense and deep, with a lush texture for the year and a chocolatey ripeness to the flavors of leather, game and cedar. For such a pliant, sexy Pomerol, this has lovely verve and backbone.

The sexy, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 lEvangile achieved 14% natural alcohol, as high as any of the great vintages at this estate. Abundant amounts of dark raspberry and black cherry fruit intertwined with sweet plums and hints of figs as well as spring flowers jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, fleshy, supple-textured, silky wine. Drink it now or cellar it for 15-20 years.
