Château L'Evangile

Château L'Evangile, Pomerol, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

Produced from 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, this Domaines Barons de Rothschild property has struck the right chords in 2016 with a dark, salty and mineral effort. Initially there is an abundance of black fruits, pure crème de cassis, blackcurrant jam and hints of graphite. Then there are starry bright fruits and hints of stony minerals. This is an admirably deep and polished wine. The 2016 Evangile is a rich, large-scale Pomerol with a deeply mineral character - one senses a more technical style here than say VCC and the tannins are more evident than at some estates, but that really shouldn't be a problem - there is such concentration and an abundance of fruit. It feels more classical than some of the more tamed, polished examples from Pomerol. This really is a deeply impressive Vin de Garde.

critic reviews

94/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2016 L’Evangile has a sumptuous, generous bouquet of copious wild strawberry and cranberry aromas laced with veins of blue fruit. The oak here is neatly integrated, and this l’Evangile is perhaps a little more open at this stage than other vintages I have tasted. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry, very harmonious and certainly fresh and tensile, displaying a fine bead of acidity. It perhaps does not quite deliver the riveting complexity of some of its peers toward the finish, where it needs more body and persistence, but otherwise this is a very finely crafted L’Evangile that should age well over the next 20 or 30 years.
