Château L'Evangile

Château L'Evangile, Pomerol, 2010

justerini & brooks tasting note

88.8% Merlot and 11.2% Cabernet Franc. A candidate for wine of the vintage; the Evangile 2010 stands out amongst some stiff competition. Chateau Lafite have been exploiting this fabulous terroir (between Cheval Blanc and Petrus) since 1990 with stunning results. It is hard to say which of the 2005, the 2009 or the 2010 will be best - all are magnificent in their own right. The 2010 displays a tremendous bouquet of cut flowers, vanilla, fine herbs, graphite, griotte cherry, blueberries, blood oranges, stones and cherry blossom. This is so composed with assured notes of cassis, bright red berries, blue fruit and liquid minerals. Multilayered, sumptuous and refined; this is decadent but in no way tarty. An effortless, seamless Evangile.

critic reviews

97/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Reserved aromatics at first, slowly uncurling to creme de cassis, orange peel, cherry pit, cassis, incense, intense and smoky, full of character, still very young. Muscular with a ton of life ahead of it, poised and pulled together with creamy tannins and crushed rose petals on the finish.

The 2010 L’Évangile is a Pomerol that I have rated highly in the past, however this bottle performed poorly. It feels slightly oxidised on the nose and is lacking the freshness of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and well judged acidity. It feels quite ferrous and slightly dry towards the finish, suggesting that this might not last the course. I will defer scoring this for another time. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.
