Château Picque Caillou, Pessac Léognan, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

Pauline Calvet's Picque Caillou is a perennial favourite of ours. Situated between Haut Brion and Merignac airport it makes a habit of outclassing far more illustrious names from the Pessac Leognan commune. Produced from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and aged in 40% new oak barrels and a mixture of one and two year old barrels, this is another superb effort packed with briary fruit and hints of liquorice. This is good, honest juice - refreshing and balanced.

critic reviews

90-92/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

The 2023 Picque Caillou has a deep garnet-purple color. It pops from the glass with bright notes of redcurrants, fresh blackberries, and raspberries, plus touches of dried Provence herbs, pencil lead, and lavender. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a good amount of juicy black fruits, with lightly chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on a savory note.

The 2023 Picque Caillou is a tasty, refined Pessac-Léognan. Floral top notes and mid-weight structure emphasize the more refined side of the appellation. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Lovely red/purplish-toned fruit opens first, followed by hints of spice and crushed flowers that lend nuance. Well-integrated tannins further add to an impression of finesse.
