Le Pin, Pomerol, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Jacques Thienpont's Le Pin 2017 was initially puzzling. We expect to be knocked out by an exotic and intoxicating perfume, however, this example is quite subdued. This is by no means a criticism, this is a wonderful Le Pin, but at this stage it is a little more introverted and subtle than we would expect. People often refer to Le Pin as the Richebourg of Bordeaux, well if we are to speak in Burgundian terms, this is more Grivot Richebourg, understated, refined and full of class. With aeration there are undertones of Le Pin perfume, decadent liqueur fruits, wild strawberries, truffle and spice. It is very understated for Le Pin, but it has an abundance of pure velvety fruit, dark cherry, açaí and cocoa nibs. By any other standards, this is exuberant, fragrant and intoxicating, but as a Le Pin, it is definitely more reserved, but no less wonderful. Vivid, detailed and very refined.
