Petrus, Pomerol, 2024

justerini & brooks tasting note

The Petrus team conceded the 2024 was a “challenging year with lots of humidity”. Merlot is particularly susceptible to coulure during flowering, this was coupled with significant mildew pressure throughout the spring and early summer. Normally Petrus advocates an early harvest, but in `24 decided to harvest as late as possible to get more maturity. When they decided to pick, this was done with precision and speed. Macerations were shortened and élevage will be reduced to 12 to 13 months in barrel. As one would expect, the Petrus 2024 is a glorious rendition, perfectly interpreting the vintage through their terroir. Nothing is forced or out of place, this is all about restraint and elegance, pure refinement and fine detail, respecting what nature has provided. The team rather modestly state their ambition is to “make a charming wine”. The 2024 is certainly charming, but it’s much more than that. Initially, one is greeted with a cerebral bouquet of red cherries and crème de mûre flirting with suggestions of bergamot, sandalwood, vanilla pod, peonies and iris. Although gentle and flowing, there’s lots of nuance and intrigue. Pure, raspberry flavours mingle with notes of potpourri, leaf tea and delicate spices. There’s an abundance of crisp fruit with a velvety texture, so composed and assured, culminating in sophisticated, reverberating tannins that delight the palate with fine salts, ethereal fruits and gravelly minerals. A quintessentially serene and pixilated Petrus, full of elegance, grace and latent power. Outstanding.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Skyrockets out with bold notes of black cherries, red currant jelly, and rose oil, followed by hints of graphite, anise, and mint tea. The medium-bodied palate is light on its feet and elegantly styled, featuring silky tannins and great tension, finishing long and pure with loads of mineral sparks.

The 2024 Pétrus has impressive ripeness on the nose in the context of the growing season, with scents of blackcurrant, blueberry and iodine. Its aromatic profile touts a little more flamboyance and sensuality than those of some of its fellow Pomerol estates. Cashmere tannins and perfectly judged acidity frame the harmonious and poised palate. Whilst it does not contain the profound complexity of the 2022 (for example), the 2024 does retain the essence of Pétrus. There is a little more flesh and just a hint of spicebox towards the finish. At 13.3% abv, this is just a delicious Pomerol.

This feels like it is operating on a different plane from many, clear from the first aromatics. Showcasing latent hidden power, sappy, savoury but in this case not overly slim, just full of muscular goodnesss and black fruits. Small yield because of flowering, as you see everywhere in Pomerol, 50% new oak for ageing, although winemaker Olivier Berrouet expects to do a slightly shorter ageing than usual. Around 80% of production is in this wine. 3.6ph. Harvest Sepember 24 to October.

Cropped at 27 hectoliters per hectare and harvested between 24 September and 1 October, the 2024 Petrus is shaping up nicely, exhibiting aromas of sweet cherries and raspberries mingled with licorice and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, polished and suave, it's cool and seamless, with a layered, velvety palate and a charming, pure profile. The grand vin represents some 85% of the harvest, and it's seeing a reductive elevage to preserve the maximum of fruit and flesh.
