Le Montrachet, Grand Cru, 2019

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

For all of its sunshine and luxury, this is also one of the most nuanced and refined Montrachets I can ever remember having from Sauzet. It melts in the mouth. Such long, powerful but slinky flavours of acacia honey, sun-kissed golden fruit and mirabelle with a wonderful brightness and luminosity shining through the richness and silky texture. Just when you think the flavours will slow down and peter out, they accelerate into a long, echoing finish. A truly memorable drop.

Opening in the glass with dramatic aromas of pear, white flowers, clear honey and toasted bread, the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with lively balancing acids and a deep and complete profile, concluding with a long, lavish finish. It's produced from must purchased from Baron Thenardwhose large holdings lie on the Chassagne side.

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean and precise bouquet that I find less concentrated than either the Bienvenue or Bâtard-Montrachet. There is a very slight minty note that might become more pronounced with time in bottle. The palate is more intense than the nose suggests, slightly honeyed in texture, spicier than the Bâtard with a powerful and persistent finish. I would put it on par with Sauzet’s other Grand Crus rather than ahead, at least at the moment.
