Chassagne Montrachet, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru
Jean Noël Gagnard

Chassagne Montrachet, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru, 2015

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Even more intensity and concentration than the Petit Clos but slimmer in shape and tighter-knit. Focussed, finely-poised flavours with a distinct and mouth-watering stoniness, touches of limestone citrus, roasted nut, herb and salt. Powerful, crisp and mineral, in the vein of Meursault Perriéres. Situated at the southern end of the “Les Caillerets” sector Caroline’s vines are planted on a steep slope of shallow pebbly soils with a fine south-east exposure. The most precise and intense of Caroline Lestimée’s Chassagnes from heroldest vines (over 60 years old).

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru is showing a lot of reduction on the nose that obscures terroir and fruit expression. Whether there is much behind that, it is difficult to tell. The palate is predictably reduced with a honeyed texture, moderate acidity and an unwanted ginger biscuit/gourmand finish that implies short-term longevity. I expected this to show better, but perhaps the reduction is too fixed at the moment. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
