Nuits St Georges, Les St Georges, 1er Cru, 2014

justerini & brooks tasting note

Always more opulent and heady in its youth than the darker and more brooding Vaucrains but this has every bit as much mystery and and complexity to it. So aromatic and bursting with wild damson, bramble, sloe and cherry fruit flavours that are lifted by a tense minerally freshness. There is much to admire in its youth but even more to come with age, the finish is expansive and haunting. The great vineyard of Les St Georges, perfectly situated mid slope, has the potential to be the region's only Grand Cru.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les St-Georges has a clean and pure bouquet; although at the moment, there appears to still be some new oak to be subsumed. But I like the sensuality of these aromatics that are more 2015 in style than 2014. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening: dark cherries, allspice, a pinch of white pepper and a slightly herbaceous, verbena tea-tinged finish that gently fans out. Quintessential, modern-day Chevillon reallysuperb. Tasted September 2017.

Medium red. Redcurrant, smoke and minerals on the nose. On the lean side but juicy and spicy, showing good energy and cut to the flavors of redcurrant and red licorice.
