Barolo, Bricco Fiasco, 2014

justerini & brooks tasting note

With its perfumed, sweet red berry fruit, this shows all of the allure and charm it usually does but with a rare focus and spark. A beautifully clear and fine structure is overlaid by intense small red berry and cherry fruit with a touch of rose hip. Stylish and vital. Superb The Bricco Fiasco is a relatively sandy plot at the top of the Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto, planted with 70 year old vines. Contrary to the regular Barolo the wine is aged in oak barriques, but only 10% new wood, again to limit oak influence - a direction Azelia have been going in for some years now. This sandy soil gives incredibly aromatic and fruity characteristics to the wine.

critic reviews

92/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2014 Barolo Bricco Fiasco offers a carefully balanced and elegant bouquet that is partially based on vibrant primary fruit and partially based on the more ethereal varietal notes you get from Nebbiolo. These aromas recall powdered licorice, tar and balsam herb. Vines in the Fiasco vineyard were planted in the 1940s, and the Fiasco site in Castiglione Falletto has a greater component of sand, which helps to establish those fine fruity and floral aromas. The mouthfeel is less impactful compared to recent past releases.

The 2014 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a typical wine for the vintage. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, smoke, iron and dried rose petal build in this super-classic, light to medium-bodied Barolo from Azelia. The wine displays lovely persistence and grip but, like all of the 2014s here, is tightly wound and a bit edgy.
