Barolo, Bricco Fiasco, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

Pressed strawberries, redcurrants and plums leap out of the glass here with a certain radiance and energy that recalls the 2016 vintage. Though imbued with power the tannins are nicely ripe and tapered and the acidity is nicely interwoven through a core of sweet rich fruits. The Bricco Fiasco is a relatively sandy plot at the top of the Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto, planted with 70-year-old vines. This sandy soil gives incredibly aromatic and fruity characteristics to the wine. Since 2016 the wine has been aged exclusively in large oak botti, for two years.

critic reviews

90/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2019 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is bright, precise and nicely delineated. Sweet red cherry, mint, white pepper and orange peel give this mid-weight, nervy young Barolo plenty of top register intensity. Deceptively understated and nuanced, the 2019 is going to be interesting to follow.

Bricco Fiasco is a proprietary name for a vineyard in Castiglione Falletto with 85 year old vines. Luigi Scavino says, "These vines represent a unique heritage for our family." The 2019 Barolo Bricco Fiasco (with 5,800 bottles released) is a little shy initially, with heavier berry fruit aromas that eventually relax to show campfire ash, pencil shaving and pressed rose. Put this bottle aside for a few more years.
