Barolo, Bricco Fiasco, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

According the Luigi Scavino this is “a wine that totally expresses the vintage; power and structure but also elegance and finesse. Fresh fruit and flowers with crisp tannins. More elegant compared to 2010.” We think it is the best Bricco Fiasco they have made. Prismatic multifaceted nose. Very salty palate, sleek vertical sheets of tannin. A very finely polished structure interspersed with flavours of tea leaf, spice and wild berry. Crystalline and intense. Radiant, precise and focused. The Bricco Fiasco is a relatively sandy plot at the top of the Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto, planted with 70-year-old vines. This sandy soil gives incredibly aromatic and fruity characteristics to the wine. Contrary to the regular Barolo the wine is aged half in oak barriques, but only 8% new wood, and half in large botti. This is designed to further limit the oak influence on the wine - a direction Azelia have been going in for some years now.

critic reviews

96/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2016 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a glorious wine. Sweet red cherry, mint, iron, rose petal and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that grace this exquisite, beautifully layered Barolo. A wine of subtlety, nuance and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. I don't remember ever tasting a Bricco Fiasco with this level of finesse and nuance. Two thousand sixteen is the first vintage in which the Bricco Fiasco is aged part in cask and part in barrique. All I can say is: Wow!
