Barolo, Brunate, 2013

justerini & brooks tasting note

A Barolo that flexes muscle but toned, fine muscle. Driven but poised, the fine tannins provide a solid but not too obtrusive backbone. There is no unnecessary fat on this, linear, strong and gripping with the most wonderful clarity of flavour: Crunchy crisp red fruits, wild strawberry and red cherry, mixed with minerals, crushed stone, earth and sweet spice nuances. Finely balanced, this is a very distinguished Barolo indeed. One of the top Cru vineyards of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune. Marengo's parcel of Brunate is at 350 metres altitude has been owned by his family since 1903. Aged in 25% new oak barriques for 24 months. 6000 bottles are produced.

critic reviews

90/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

Marengo's 2013 Barolo Brunate is dark, sensual and inviting. A host of plum, blackberry, spice, new leather, chocolate and menthol notes flesh out in the glass. There is good depth in the glass, but less in the way of nuance of Brunate pedigree. Soft contours make the 2013 easy to drink young, but readers will have to look past the copious French oak.
