Barolo, Brunate, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

A complex mix of savoury and sweet - juicy, peppery red fruits and sandalwood flavours. Fruity, open and fleshy with a sapid, mineral note, too; full and mouth-coating. Not a powerhouse Brunate but disarmingly alluring now and nicely pitched. One of the top Cru vineyards of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune. Marengo's parcel of Brunate, situated at 350 metres altitude, has been owned by his family since 1903 and the vines average seventy years old. Aged in 25% new oak barriques for 24 months.

critic reviews

95/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Fruit for this wine comes from a 1.2-hectare site with classic calcareous soils. The 2018 Barolo Brunate is very different from the other two wines in this portfolio. Brunate shows a higher level of intensity and boldness with dark fruit, sweet plum, rusty nail and garden soil. This expression is also best equipped with integrated tannins and freshness to continue on a steady aging trajectory. I love that subtle note of sweetness that appears on the finish. This is a 5,800-bottle release.

92/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2018 Barolo Brunate comes across as elegant and restrained in this vintage, which is not a bad thing at all. The Brunate signatures are present, but their intensity is decidedly dialed down. Dark cherry fruit, leather, spice, tobacco and menthol linger on the soft, open-knit finish.
