Barolo, Brunate, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

Brunate today is all lift and perfume, being much redder in profile, but with an extra level of smooth, savoury tobacco and saline spice. Refined and high toned – the flagship wine of the estate. Brunate is one of the top cru vineyards of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune. Marengo's 0.6ha of Brunate is split across two parcels averaging 350 metres of altitude. Brunate has been in Marco’s family since 1903 and the vines average seventy years old. Aged in 15% new oak barriques for 24 months.

A stunning beauty, the M. Marengo 2021 Barolo Brunate sticks to a classic Nebbiolo playlist. It delivers high tones of dried mint and blue flower, with that menthol-like note being a distinctive element of this site. There is a stony, taut character as well, and the wine feels vibrant and alive in terms of mouthfeel. The tannins are polished and firm. I recommend putting the Brunate aside for another 10 years.

The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another potent, deep wine from Marengo. Spice, leather, tobacco, incense and gravel all run through this imposing Barolo. Broad shoulders hold it all together. The 2021 strikes me a a wine to drink over the medium term.
