Plat'Bos, Chenin Blanc, Swartland, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Introducing the fourth vintage of the Plat’bos Chenin Blanc, planted right next to the Skaliekop vineyard in decomposed granite. Planted in 1981 on the Paardebosch farm, this vineyard is an important component in both the main Chenin Blanc and Aristargos and it will continue to do so. “We have been farming this vineyard since winter 2013 and it has been a pillar in our granite approach towards our white wines. Grapes were harvested in the first part of February, being one of the earliest Chenin Blanc vineyards we work with, planted on a northern slope. Harvesting took place over three picking dates and all lots were fermented and aged separately.” Quite a restrained, discreet bouquet of flowers and red apples leads in to an absolutely bell-clear palate awash with cooling, crystalline citrus fruits, chalk and minerals, a touch of wax and spice, immensely taut and persistent – this positively reverberates on the finish.

critic reviews

93/100Anthony Mueller,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Bright and mineral with lime candy and lemon meringue aromas, the 2021 Plat'bos Chenin Blanc is illuminated with yellow apple essences in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is electric on the palate, showing an impressive 11% alcohol that sways with finesse and balance. The Chenin continues to grow in amplitude as it ends with a delicate mineral essence and electric energy that is food-friendly. Bravo!

The 2021 Chenin Blanc Plat'bos comes from granite soils; the vines were planted in 1981, and form the backbone of their main Chenin Blanc blend. This has an enticing nose with yellow stone fruit, nutmeg and light chamomile/white tea scents, a nutty element surfacing with time. The palate is very well balanced, perhaps the most weight of the four single vineyard Chenins, with a caressing and slightly spicy finish that lingers. Very fine.
