Cabernet Sauvignon, Montecillo Vineyard, 2022
One of the great vineyards of Moon Mountain, planted in 1968 and dry farmed and organic for as long as anyone can remember. Sitting at 1800 feet, above the fog line, on volcanic soils, Montecillo basks in the evening sun and is always the first sites to ripen in the portfolio. In 2022 a total of three barrels were made. Picked before the heat spike this offers up rippling dark fruit and dried flower notes in a package that is taut, mineral and brimming with restrained intensity. The tannins are impeccably crafted, and the dark fruit glows persistently on the finish. Superb.
critic reviews
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is the crown jewel in this range from Di Costanzo. Dark, sumptuous and layered, the 2022 possesses notable depth and plenty of structure. Like all the 2022s here, the Montecillo is a bit more approachable than most vintages, which is not a bad thing at all. With a gorgeous mid-palate and a striking, resonant finish, the Montecillo is terrific.
There are just three barrels (one new) of the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecelio Vineyard, from a dry-farmed, high-altitude vineyard (1,800 feet above sea level) planted in 1968 on the western side of the Mayacamas range. It's a chunky, earthy, black-cherry-scented effort, medium to full-bodied, ripe and concentrated, with an open-knit feel and a slightly coarse, tannic finish. It will be interesting to see how it evolves prior to bottling, but it does avoid any of the overripe character seen in the 2021 (the winery where the wines have been made starting in 2022 has an optical sorter).
product details
A vintage that offers a measure of immediacy and up-front charm that you don’t always find in young Di Costanzo wines. Charlie Smith, from high on Moon Mountain, brims with red fruit and floral notes in a bright chiselled structure that fizzes with energy. Caldwell, a vineyard in Coombsville that used to make up half of the Dunn bottling, picked after the heat dome, is darker and ultra supple, with a soft skinned hedonistic vibe that is hugely compelling – it reminded us ever so slightly of a Mitjaville wine. The famed Montecillo, from slightly higher up Moon Mountain, has a more restrained intensity, touches of wild herb and dried flower over dark fruit and firm minerals. It is the most tannic of the three and will require longest to show its true colours. All three are fascinating visions of singular Californian Cabernet vineyards.
