Puligny Montrachet, Les Folatières, 1er Cru, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

Fine detailed smoky reduction that is beautifully integrated and not dominant at all. As you’d expect, there’s more minerality here than Referts, and a bit more cut and drive, with gripping dry extract notes amongst the white and yellow fruit. Focussed and intense. A superb Folatières. One of the top vineyards in Puligny, next to Caillerets, from a high up parcel where the soil is poor and stony but well exposed to the sun, situated in the northernmost corner of this great vineyard, right next to the Leflaive vines - above Clos de la Garenne. Fermentation and élevage take place in 350 litre barrels, with no bâtonnage, for 12 months before six months in stainless steel.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very pretty bouquet with hints of apple blossom and apricot yet underneath is the mineralité you seek from a noble vineyard like this. The palate is vibrant on the entry. There is a touch of reduction but it does not impede too much, allowing the finish to remain zesty and lively with tangy blood orange and ginger notes on the aftertaste. Very promising. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
