Barolo, Brunate, 2014

justerini & brooks tasting note

After the darker Bricco Viole, this is a return to the red fruit nose more typical of wines from La Morra. Complex but with some allure now already, sweet and freshly-scented red berries mixed with woody spices. The palate is gripping, crisply-defined and tense yet there is a certain warmth and generosity, too. Captivating and moreish and brilliantly complete Barolo of both force and finesse. One of the top Cru vineyards of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune. Marengo's parcel of Brunate is at 350 metres altitude has been owned by his family since 1903 and the vines average seventy years old. Aged in 25% new oak barriques for 24 months.

The 2014 Barolo Brunate takes us to the more structured and robust side of the Nebbiolo spectrum. The Brunate cru in La Morra is known for its deeply saturated, enriched and elegant wines. This expression from Marco Marengo makes sure that a healthy dose of sheer elegance is part of that formula. The lighter and more ethereal character of the cool 2014 vintage also comes through. The results shown here are polished and finely textured, with blue fruit and dried currant followed by tar, licorice and spice. The finish is long and silky with excellent tannic management.

The 2014 Barolo Brunate is another powerful, imposing wine from Marco Marengo. Deep and pliant through the middle, with a huge core of fruit, the 2014 has much to offer. Black cherry, plum, lavender, leather and smoke infuse the deep, resonant finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 ages. At this stage, it clearly holds quite a bit of promise. In 2014, there is no Riserva; all the fruit was used for this, the straight Brunate bottling.
