Geronimo, Cinsault, 2023
Sappy and herbal in style with a paradoxical cooler, dark fruited profile on this tasting, its bright aromatics revealing notes of nori and black tea, with black raspberry and strawberry on the palate. Typically fermented with 35-40% whole bunches and aged in 500L barrel, proximity to the ocean (the closest of any Cinsault in Stellenbosch) allows for a longer hang time and a less savoury profile than Cinsaults produced in other regions. A Firgrove single vineyard planted 1968.
critic reviews
The 2023 Geronimo is 100% Cinsault from low-yielding decomposed granitic soils that tend to produce thick-skinned berries. It underwent 60% whole-bunch fermentation and aged in 500-liter French oak barrels. Wilted rose petal and lavender open on the very effervescent nose, with touches of menthol emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with licorice-infused red fruit and fine acidity, becoming quite linear and strict toward the pastille-like finish. Very fine, very fun to drink.
