Geronimo, Cinsault, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

“The Poor Man’s Pinot” is an apt yet perhaps slightly disparaging way to describe what is certainly one of the Cape’s best Cinsaults. What’s more the 2021 sees another leap in quality as it now includes 30% of fruit from the Lotter vineyard in Franschhoek, the second oldest red vineyard in the country, bringing an extra dimension to this already beautifully perfumed, mouth watering red. Produced with 40% whole bunches, Geronimo 2021 exudes cool bramble, redcurrants, raspberry leave and a trace of earth. Crisp in tannin with a curt, focused line of acidity (unusual for this variety), it runs to a mouth watering, grippy finish. Very impressive.

The 2021 Geronimo is a Cinsault blend that was augmented with Franschhoek fruit to the Stellenbosch, 40% whole bunch fermented. Loggerenberg believes that this cuvée is the one that has benefitted from the new winery as he has the space to leave the juice on the skins longer. It has a very perfumed bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and traces of blue fruit and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, slightly powdery in texture with a lovely piquancy on the finish. Beautiful.
