La Fleur Pétrus is always one of the most sought-after wines from Bordeaux. The original estate is a little over 9 hectares and is situated next to, you guessed it, Château Lafleur and Petrus. This terroir is unsurprisingly capable of producing exquisite wines. Now, the vines from Château Providence and a new parcel situated between Le Pin and Trotanoy (formally called Château Guillot) have swelled the estate to 18 hectares, making this the largest property on the plateau. There has been a real step up in quality here in the last few years, and the 2020 continues that trend – in fact, for many of us, this was the most impressive young La Fleur Pétrus we can recall tasting. Produced from 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this is an exquisite example. It starts with a wonderful bouquet full of aromatic complexity: blackberry, violet, blueberry, blood orange; it displays the full spectrum of fruit and minerals. This complexity in part comes from the diversity of plots, up to 18 unique different terroirs. On the palate, this goes up another level, there’s such power, concentration, complexity and opulence, but it’s all so refined with wonderful tension, refreshing yet generous, so much depth, but not at all heavy; there’s a real spark and magic here, power and elegance in equal measure. Absolutely superb, so much length and detail on the perfectly pitched, nuanced tannins. This is one of the most graceful and impressive young wines we’ve ever tasted from the Moueix range. Exquisite.

The 2020 La Fleur Pétrus has a wonderfully precise and focused bouquet with vivacious black fruit, crushed stone and subtle violet scents. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, almost Left Bank in style thanks to a seam of graphite. It's complex and engaging, maintaining cohesion and persistence on the finish. This is a superb Pomerol. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty blackberries, loamy soil, black truffles and petroleum jelly, the 2020 La Fleur-Petrus is full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with a rich, layered core of fruit framed by supple, polished tannins, concluding with a broad, licorice-inflected finish. As in 2019, it outshines Trotanoy as the star of the Mouiex Pomerol portfolio.

A blend of 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2020 La Fleur-Petrus has a deep garnet-purple color. It is quite closed to start, soon unfurling to offer glimpses of notes of redcurrant jelly, fresh black cherries, and juicy blueberries, followed by touches of red roses, wood smoke, and crushed rocks, plus a hint of dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied and chock-full of rich, decadently fragrant black fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with a mineral lift. A stunning wine - bravo!
