Le Petit Mouton, Pauillac, 2022

justerini & brooks tasting note

Produced from 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Petit Mouton, whilst not as profound or elegant as the grand vin, shares many of the same characteristics. Dark and shimmering fruit with graceful contours, hints of spice, humidor, black fruit pastels and liquorice. Vibrant, rich, but not heavy, the core of black cherry, vanilla and Asian spices is very alluring. One feels there's still a lot in reserve. Finishes with well-judged tannins laced with graphite and mocha notes. A very smart Petit Mouton.

This is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the élevage in 60% new oak, with a medium toast for most barrels, and 40% used oak barrels. A glorious nose, delicately mineral blackcurrant fruits swirled with notes of cigar box, toasted sesame seed and tobacco, perhaps pyrazine influenced, feeling very typical of the Mouton style, perhaps reminiscent of the Mouton-Rothschild of old. There follows a remarkably restrained character on the palate, with a modest texture at the start, with dark and sinewy fruits emerging through the middle, with layers of dried blackcurrant, olive, toast and currant, with a powdery and finely integrated core of tannins which add a real energy, and balanced acidity. Long and simmering with integrated and tight-knit tannins, this is a really delightful Petit Mouton which will drink well ten years from now. The alcohol is 13.89% on analysis, with 14% on the label.

Beautiful texture that is evident immediately from the nose, this is succulent, intense but precise, creamy damson, violet and tender tannins, showcasing the expansion and opulence of Petit Mouton, 3,83ph. Harvest September 1 to 26, 27% of overall production in this wine.

The 2022 Le Petit Mouton is a touch more backward than when I tasted it from barrel, but it offers wonderful purity with blackberry, cedar and light crushed stone aromas that blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit on the entry, showing impressive depth on the mid-palate. It is slightly plump and rounded in texture, with black plum and allspice notes towards the sustained finish. This is excellent.

Representing some 29% of the estate's production this year, the 2022 Le Petit Mouton shares much of the character of the grand vin, offering up a rich bouquet of cassis, dark berries, espresso roast and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that's fleshy and concentrated, with powdery tannins and an expansive finish.
