    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The 2014 is one of the last old-school Batailleys, before the inception of the second label and before the grand vin became a bit more ambitious. 2014 is at its best in the northern Medoc, where a late summer burst helped the Cabernets reach near optimum ripeness. Frederic Casteja's flagship Pauillac has evolved absolutely as expected. There's a tightly knit bouquet of cassis, flowers and gentle spice, a delicate scent of potpourri mingles with notes of cedar and raspberry. The palate is taut and controlled with lots of lovely red currant and briar; there's still a touch of 2014 austerity, whilst packed with ripe fruit, there's certainly no excess. We'd recommend putting this in a decanter for an hour or two to allow the fruit to express itself. In short, a lovely, controlled, athletic looking Batailley with plenty of persistence and energy that is just beginning to drink well and will continue to improve over the next decade.
