justerini & brooks tasting note

Having already tasted through all the components with Olivier Bernard and Stephane Derenoncourt in the UK, we knew this was a wonderful vintage for Domaine de Chevalier and a fitting tribute to mark Olivier's fortieth vintage. Our tasting at the estate confirmed that this is one of the best examples of his tenure. The nose is lifted and lacy with suggestions of black tea, forest fruits, plum, sandalwood, cigar smoke, all infused with herbs and spices. There's great intensity and presence. This is measured and fluid, all balance and charm, with a nervy tension running through the fruit. Lovely contours as it focusses in on the tapered, tannic seam packed with minute detail. A really assured DDC produced from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

96/100Chris Kissack,The Wine Independent

The grand vin from the Bernard family is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and the élevage was in 35% new oak barrels, although there is also a growing percentage of oak foudre s in use here. A finely poised nose, exuding dark fruit in a classy style, blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorice wrapped up with notes of tar, rose petals, white peach and vanilla flowers, infused with a little toasted richness from the oak. The palate holds together very well, showing a restrained texture, controlled by the midpalate’s structure, with fine tannins all beautifully knit together, and a fresh acidity which gives it a real sense of lift. Plenty of primary grip and dark primary flavours here, but real harmony and integration, and it is long too, with fabulously ripe tannins. This will need plenty of time to come good but it will be very fine when it gets there. Tasted three times. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

Medium to full intensity, clear depth of colour as is typical in the vintage, but with lovely soft ruby nuances throughout, this is still young, more folded in on itself than many wines in 2022, has character and finesse, and ability to age, one to recommend. Maintains estate signature, and is packed with sage and clove spices, touches of incense, toast, olive paste and crayon. 40hl/h yield, 40th harvest of Olivier Bernard.

The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier bursts from the glass with enticing blackberry, incense and blueberry aromas that do not hold back. Despite the intensity, it retains superb delineation and focus, with beautifully integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate is packed with black fruit laced with graphite and a dash of black pepper. Very well balanced, it is unequivocally one of the most powerful wines I have encountered from Domaine de Chevalier without compromising its classicism. This is outstanding.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Domaine de Chevalier delivers aromas of minty dark berries, cherries and ripe plums mingled with hints of licorice, coniferous forest and spices. Medium to full-bodied, its concentrated and layered, textured and elegant, framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, penetrating, long finish. Olivier Bernard and his team have crafted an outstanding wine that will bear a special label commemorating his 40th vinification at this Pessac-Leognan reference point.
