Chambolle Musigny, Les Veroilles, 1er Cru, 2009
Véroilles is one of Chambolle’s highest Crus, along with Fuées, adjacent to Bonnes-Mares, often producing very intense, racy and tight-knit wines. The 2009 is one of the greatest I have tasted; perfumed with heady scents of cherry blossom, the palate is ripe, fruity, energetic and seductive, with scintillating flavours of red cherry, Morello, bramble, damson and lots of mineral characteristics – powerful, gripping, fresh but sweet, a long, explosive and vital finish. Stunning.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles comes across as quite extroverted today. The focus and sheer energy of the dark fruit are what stand out most. Barthods Veroilles has developed beautifully since I tasted it last year. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. Barthods 2009s are just as impressive from bottle as they were from barrel. Barthod and her husband Louis Boillot told me they moved up their harvest date by four days in 2009 because the fruit was ripening quickly. That turns out to have been a very wise choice.
