Chambolle Musigny, Les Veroilles, 1er Cru
Ghislaine Barthod

Chambolle Musigny, Les Veroilles, 1er Cru, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

Richer and more voluptuous than the Fuées, ample and full whilst maintaining good freshness and minerality, silky fruit flavours of bramble, loganberry and raspberry. Dense but with great balance and charm. One of the great years for Véroilles. This is one of Chambolle’s higher Crus sitting adjacent to Bonnes-Mares. It also has denser soils than its neighbouring Chambolle vineyards often producing very intense, mineral, but powerful and compact wines, rather like Bonnes-Mares in style.

Bright red with ruby tones. High-toned nose began a bit roasted but aeration brought very good lift to the aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and minerals. Rather full in the middle but difficult to taste today as it's considerably more saline than the Fuées, with its fruit sweetness currently in the deep background. (From barrel this wine was a bomb of dark fruits and showed terrific savory energy.) Finishes very long, with serious tannic thrust and surprising verve. This wine is earthbound and salty while the Fuées is airy, and it will clearly require patience.
