Chambolle Musigny, Les Veroilles, 1er Cru
Ghislaine Barthod

Chambolle Musigny, Les Veroilles, 1er Cru, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

In our view the most successful cuvée in Barthod's cellar this year. Full of verve and resplendent fruit, the tannins are gripping but silky and melt into the body of the wine. Bursting with fresh, floral bramble and loganberry fruit, notes of cherry blossom and black cherry. Juicy, broad and expansive but holding its shape and definition well. Fulsome, satisfying and impeccably balanced. Top class. This is one of Chambolle’s higher crus sitting adjacent to Bonnes-Mares. It also has denser soils than its neighbouring Chambolle vineyards often producing very intense, mineral but powerful and compact wines, rather like Bonnes-Mares in style.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Veroilles is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with a beautiful bouquet of cherries, red berries, blood orange, peonies and rose hips, complemented by subtle soil tones and a deft framing of oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, it's long and intense, concluding with a finish that's more searingly mineral than even Barthod's Cras this year.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 1er Cru has a very precise bouquet with perfumed, extremely well focused red fruit infused with rose petals. The palate is defined by filigreed tannins, and the fruit gains weight toward one of the most impressive finishes from Ghislaine Barthod, delivering real mineralité and tension. Highly recommended.
