Volnay, Les Fremiets, 1er Cru, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

So satisfying for its mix of body, generous fruit, powerful but velvety structure and earthy minerality. Voluptuous, full and robust flavours of cherry, cherry stone and hedgerow fruit with a distinct salty kick. A clay dominated vineyard on the north side of the village, further up the hill from Clos des Angles, and so the soil is less deep here – the resulting wine is more structured and mineral.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets is also showing very well, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of dark berries, raw cocoa, orange rind, forest floor and dried flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, having come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel, framed by juicy acids and fine, stony tannins. It's a superb wine that confirms the serious stature of this vintage chez d'Angerville.

Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer.
