Volnay, Les Fremiets, 1er Cru, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

A vineyard that touches Clos des Angles but worlds apart in style. A more serious, structured wine. Fresh and punchy, this has muscle and verve to it. Crunchy plum, raspberry and loganberry fruit underlaid by earthy undergrowth notes. Invigorating and powerful. A clay dominated vineyard on the north side of the village, further up the hill from Clos des Angles, and so the soil is less deep here – the resulting wine is more structured and mineral.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet unwinds in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet mingling raspberries and blood orange with savory bass notes of woo smoke, loamy soil, espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a deep and tight-knit core, bright acids and a long finish.

The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone aromas, touches of rose petal emerging with aeration. The palate is framed by fine-grained tannin, quite citric on the entry and one of the most Pommard-like of d’Angerville’s Volnays. This is an energetic, edgy Volnay thanks to the limestone soil here. I suspect it will age extremely well.
