There is a clear step change here as the Juffer Sonnenuhr, from the heart of the vineyard, shows a more backward and introverted profile. It’s what you’d expect from a majestic site at this point. Firmer, more bolt-like acidity and a concentrated core of stone fruit and pressed limes, it’s less sparkly and jovial than the Juffer, instead far more elemental. It deserves a few years in the cellar to come together. A small proportion of the blend was in 500L tonneau, as Oliver ultimately decided to include the rare Im Falkenstein parcel in the main Juffer Sonnenuhr blend. Ageing is otherwise carried out in German fuder.

The 2022 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer GG shows light to yellow, finely concentrated fruit as well as delicate Brauneberg slate notes. Elegant, juicy and spicy on the first palate and dense and powerful on the finish, the 2022 Juffer reveals substance that is carried to the finish by salt and acidity and is given the right framework with a fine tannin structure. It was bottled in August 2023 with 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted with Oliver Haag in Wiesbaden in late August 2024, one year after my first review two or three weeks after the bottling.

The 2022 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs underwent a Flurbereinigung in 1988, and most vines are now 35 years old, while some parcels still have 80-year-old vines. This was fermented and aged in Fuder (1000 liter,) 2000 liter barrels and tonneau. The nose is rather closed, but the palate opens with citrus zest and rock dust. The palate is very slender, very pithy, austere, and all about stone with dialed-down fruit. There is slimness but absolute depth; it feels like liquid stone with its immense depth. Citrus makes for an austere finish. Definitely needs bottle age but will blossom. (Bone-dry)
