Frauenberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2020

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

This is wild and spontaneous and primal, from pepper, to smoke to very fine citrus spray and green apples. The palate plays with fine red fruit, a seam of stoniness and a sense of tension and chewiness. Finishing long and haunting, this is a GG with such a huge character - complexity but also great refinement and levity. Cool, stony yet also highly expressive. top stuff. The vines here have very little topsoil before diving straight into limestone. Buffeted by wind from the Zellertal valley, sitting at 280m above sea level, this is always the last vineyard to be harvested and the wines have an aromatic clarity that is startling.

Hans-Oliver Spanier's 2020 Frauenberg Riesling GG is clear and very stony on the spicy, untamed and reductive nose that needs a lot of time to open up and gain finesse. Rich and round on the palate, this full-bodied and elegant Riesling is still slightly bitter due to the long lees' aging, and it remains brittle for the moment. Not really stimulating at this early stage but already bottled. Maybe time will help? Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021.
