Barolo, San Rocco, 2006

justerini & brooks tasting note

A first class single vineyard from the Serralunga commune whose wines are very distinct from those of Bricco Fiasco, showing this zone’s tell-tale signs of liquorice, spice and dark fruits. The vines are between 40 and 50 years old and the wine is aged in 20% new wood for 24 months. A monumental Barolo one of the greats of the vintage. All of the liquorice character you get from Serralunga with the sophistication of Bricco Fiasco yet more complex still, there is a distinct undergrowth and earthy minerality that Azelia's other wines don't have. Very intense powerful but very focused not at all too burly or out of control, linear, mouth filling dark bramble, cherry, currant and strawberry fruit, with spicy notes of liquorice, cinnamon, pepper and herb.

critic reviews

95/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2006 Barolo San Rocco is sensual and enveloping. It's hard to know where to start with the San Rocco, as fruit, acidity and structure are all beautifully integrated and refined. Still incredibly young, the wine will require a bit of patience, but the purity of the fruit is impossible to miss even at this early stage. The finish alone is eternal.
